Born in the wrong body

Doctors in Britain are reviewing guidelines for the treatment of people under 18 with gender dysphoria. This is a condition where someone is born one sex but feels they are really the other. A key issue is the age at which young people can be prescribed drugs which pause puberty. Sitting in her kitchen, 16 year old Nikki (name changed to protect her identity) looks and acts like any other teenage girl. She gossips with her mum, teases her younger brothers, and giggles as she texts her new boyfriend. The only difference is that Nikki was born biologically a boy. "I've always felt like a girl," she says. As a child, she dressed up in girls' clothing, played with girls' toys, and gravitated towards other girls. As she got older, Nikki realised there was a difference between what she felt and her body. "It used to make me feel ill and so horribly down," she remembers. "I'd just wish that I wasn't around. Everything to do with me being male was horrible, I just couldn't stand it." When she was seven Nikki was diagnosed with gender dysphoria. Her parents initially tried to steer her towards accepting she was a boy, but by eight she was living as a girl at home, and by nine was going to school as a girl. "I loved it," she says, "people picked on me a lot, but it was amazing in my eyes because I was allowed to show everyone who I was." Terrified and distressed- As Nikki approached her teens, things became more difficult. The bullying got a lot worse, and puberty was about to begin. "That was scary," recalls Nikki. "I do love to sing, so the thought of my voice breaking was horrible." Most young people who experience gender issues before puberty end up remaining in their biological sex. Experiencing their own sex hormones at puberty can be a key factor in this. Nikki's mum Sharon (name changed to protect identity) hoped that this would be the case for Nikki, but the possibility of her body changing had the opposite effect. "She was just so terrified and very very distressed," says Sharon. "Her conviction that she would rather die became very much more clear during that point, it was very strong - I'm not going to live through this I'd rather be dead." Blocking puberty One treatment for young people with strong gender dysphoria is drugs known as hypothalamic blockers. These block an individual's sex hormones, suspending puberty. If the drugs are stopped, puberty resumes. Over the past ten years, doctors in several countries have begun prescribing blockers in the early stages of puberty, at around 12 years old. This gives adolescents more time to explore and make decisions about their identity. This approach was pioneered by the Amsterdam Gender Clinic for Children and Adolescents in the Netherlands. "If you wait too long, the adolescents go through their puberty and have changes they don't want to have," says the clinic's head, Professor Peggy Cohen-Kettenis. In Britain blockers are prescribed by the government-funded Tavistock Gender Identity Development Service. Their current policy is to use them later in puberty, at around 16. 'Altering nature' "There are very good reasons put forward for early intervention," says the Tavistock's director, Dr Polly Carmichael. "However it is important to bear in mind that this is still a relatively new intervention." Dr Carmichael says concerns include the effects of early intervention on physical development, and that it can preclude fertility. "There is also an issue around the impact of sex hormones on brain development," she adds. "If one stops pubertal hormones very early on in puberty, is one in some way altering the course of nature?" Research from the Dutch clinic has shown positive outcomes so far, and Dr Carmichael says the Tavistock plans to start offering blockers earlier in puberty as part of a research project. According to Professor Cohen-Kettenis, doctors have to strike a difficult balance. "In general interfering with development is difficult if you don't completely understand why," she says, "and doctors' main concern is 'first do no harm.' But we expect that it will be even more harming if you do not do anything." Sharon and Nikki felt that waiting until 16 was not an option and decided to go to the United States where Nikki was prescribed blockers at 13. They want Britain to follow international guidelines which recommend the use of blockers earlier in puberty. 'My female life' When Nikki talks about her life now, her mood visibly changes. She smiles more and bounces in her seat with excitement. She has recently started studying at a new college where no one knows she was born a boy. "College was the start of my female life, my girl life properly. I'm happy." In line with British and most international guidelines, Nikki began taking female hormones at 16 and plans to have gender reassignment surgery when she is 18. Although the blockers are reversible, they can be seen as the beginning of the road towards a sex change, and there are concerns about whether people aged 12 or 13 can make informed decisions about embarking on this process. But Nikki says she knew what she was doing: "It's your own body, it's your choice, it's not anyone else's to decide for you, because that's just taking away all the control that people want to have and people need to be sane." (my view)-ARE PEOPLE THAT STUPID........its called BEING GAY.......all gays say and do this shit!calling it something else is TRYING to justify being gay all your life and trying to remove said label....it won't work fags....PEOPLE ARE REALLY PATHETICALLY DUMB!

Paperboy offered £6.93 redundancy

A 13-year-old paperboy in Bedfordshire who earns £6.53 a week could have been one of the youngest people in the UK to be offered a redundancy package. Kane Middleton received a formal letter which told him he was being laid off from his round in Clophill. It outlined a redundancy package of "one week's pay in lieu of notice, which equates to £6.93 (subject to tax and NI)". His employer, Letterbox Direct, was unavailable for comment. Kane said he began his round two months ago to buy treats and a new cage for his hamster, Splodge. Speaking about receiving the letter, he said: "I got this piece of paper and I didn't really understand all the words. "I asked my mum and she told me I had been made redundant. "I felt annoyed and upset." His mother Jocelyn said she was disappointed that her son had received an "impersonal" letter-Kane said he was annoyed and upset by the letter (my view)-company workers and other workers get thousands of pounds as their redundancy check ect........BUT doing this is to a kid is disgustingly cruel

Brown 'not the man to save UK' - poll

A poll of 10,000 MSN readers found that just 17% back Gordon Brown to rescue our economy. But is this a victory for David Cameron or an indictment of Labour? Fewer than one in five Brits are confident Gordon Brown can lead the nation back to economic security, it has been revealed. A poll of more than 10,000 MSN readers found that just 17% back Brown, while a significant 51% feel the prime minister has made too many mistakes already and that new leadership is a must. There also appears to be a strong sense of pessimism among those polled, with almost a third (32%) saying it does not matter who is in charge of the country as we are going to struggle regardless. Pro-Tory, or simply anti-Labour? While some might see the high number of people calling for a change in leadership as a sign of growing support for opposition leader David Cameron. However, it seems this may just be a case of pollsters adopting an "anyone-but-Labour" stance. Earlier this month, another survey found that almost half (47%) of people who planned to vote for or were leaning towards the Conservatives said it was "mainly a vote against the record of Labour". A further 17% agreed they were "mainly" voting against Gordon Brown, with just over a third actually putting their choice down to a positive endorsement of the opposition. Recent weeks have not helped Regardless of the reasons behind it, there remains little doubt that Brown is under pressure to curry favour with voters. However, those efforts have not been helped, due to a combination of unpopular decisions and events out of his control. Brown's announcement that he will sell up to £16 billion of the nation's assets to try bring spiralling public debt under control has not been well received, with some seeing it as a knee-jerk reaction that fails to address the key issue of the government's chronic overspending.A further blow to Brown's popularity came on Friday, when the UK surprisingly failed to rise out of recession. While obviously not directly Brown's fault, the prime minister now has the misfortune of leading the nation through its longest recession since records began

Otto Is 145 Years Old/Nearly 21

-Despite his age, Otto still enjoys playing ball with neighbours' children- A dog from Shropshire has been crowned the world's oldest canine, which his owners have put down to a "wholesome diet of Sunday dinners and vegetables". Otto Jones, a Dachshund terrier cross from Reabrook, Shrewsbury, is 20 years and eight months old. He has been recognised as the oldest living dog by Guinness World Records and despite his age still enjoys playing ball with neighbours' children. His owners Lynn and Peter Jones said he was a "loveable, affectionate rogue". The couple have had him since he was a puppy. TV appearance He is a bit deaf, but apart from a few grey whiskers and a touch of arthritis they said he was fit and healthy. "The only thing I can put it down to is plenty of good wholesome food. He loves his Sunday dinners and his vegetables," Mrs Jones said. His owners said the children in his street regularly call for him to play. "Nothing seems to faze him," Mrs Jones added. Otto, who is a single bachelor, is due to be feature on the Paul O'Grady Show on Channel 4 next month and has also been invited to open a dog show.

Gately 'scaled wall for Jacko'

WARNING:READING THIS ARTICLE MIGHT YOU SICK,LIKE ME..I AM DISGUSTED!-- Westlife's Nicky Byrne has revealed Stephen Gately once scaled a wall to meet Michael Jackson after seeing the King Of Pop perform in Dublin. Speaking at the London premiere of Jackson movie This Is It, Nicky said the late Boyzone singer was a huge Jackson fan and said he would have loved to attend the event. Nicky said: "Stephen I do know, through Louis (Walsh) and through Ronan (Keating), was a massive Michael Jackson fan - massive." He added: "I remember a story that when Jackson played the RDS in Dublin 10, maybe 15 years ago, Louis jumped over a wall with Stephen and bribed security and actually got up to meet Michael Jackson and got a photograph with him. "And there is a photograph somewhere, I've seen it, with Stephen and Michael together, and that was Louis' kinda little concoction to get Stephen to meet him, because Stephen had been begging to meet him for years. "So yeah, I think he would have been here tonight. He would have been first in the queue." Nicky revealed: "The reason we're here tonight is we were all supposed to go to the show when he was going to perform in London. It's amazing the after-footage. We're looking forward to seeing it tonight. "But Jackson was an inspiration to everybody, anybody who can appreciate music." (my view)-Why is it gays make the worst wako stalkers who make the worst stories?, couldn't gately get it?.......Michael fucked boys under 12 NOT grown men......well"Fairies"anyway

Silence!

SILENCE....I KILL YOU!

Elderly People sign given makeover

The new sign is the brainchild of Cumbria Tourism and it has been placed on the summit of the aptly-named Coniston Old Man mountain in the Lake District. The couple depicted on the sign have straight backs and both carry walking poles in contrast to the traditional sign in which an old man carries a walking stick and supports an elderly woman. The sign, one of 10 erected in the Lake District, has been created by artist Steve Messam. He said: ''Life doesn't stop at a certain age and there are a lot of active visitors regularly climbing and walking here that are a world away from the image of the elderly people depicted on the existing road sign. ''Equally, there's a new younger generation of people getting into outdoor sports as well so it doesn't matter what age you are - there's an adventure here to have.'' The sign was put in place by Cumbria-based climber Leo Houlding, 29, who has scaled Mount Everest as well as the Old Man of Hoy off the coast of the Orkneys. ''This reminds people what they can do in the Lake District's higher, wilder places,'' he said. Among the other new signs is one at the top of Scafell Pike - England's highest mountain - which welcomes visitors to the Lake District. Another is one on the perilous rocky Striding Edge ridge of Helvellyn mountain which instructs walkers: ''Don't Look Down - THRILL.''

Bubble Talk

"After trying to feed me penguins for four days," says Paul, who was photographing on Anvers Island off the Antarctic Peninsula, "this massive female leopard seal started showing classic signs of frustration by blowing bubbles at me." Despite her size (nearly three metres – 10 feet – long), Paul didn't feel this was aggression and so kept on shooting. He concluded that she was not just trying to offer him penguins to eat but, more importantly, making an attempt at communication, trying to figure out what his intentions were. "It was, and probably will be, the most amazing wildlife encounter of my career."

Raindrop Refresher

This is a category for photographs of animals that are not mammals or birds - in other words, the majority of animals on Earth. Most of them behave in ways that are seldom witnessed and little known or understood. So this category offers plenty of scope for fascinating behaviour. After a summer shower, András headed off to his local forest to take photographs. He specializes in pictures taken around his home near Lake Velence in Hungary – in particular, close-ups. In a sunny glade, he noticed lots of red ants running up and down a flowering common mallow, feeding on the sugar secretions of aphids sucking from the buds. Here, one of the ants sips from a raindrop balanced on a mallow petal. "The beauty of macro-photography," says András, "is the worlds it reveals – all the activity going on in miniature that you otherwise would never see."

The Storybook Wolf

When José Luis realized he had got the shot of his dreams – one that he had even sketched on paper – he couldn't quite believe it. From the start, his fear had been that the wolves would be too wary. Iberian wolves have always been persecuted by people who see them as a threat to game and livestock (which they hunt when natural food is scarce) but also because of ignorance and superstition about the supposed danger they pose. Even though they have always lived close to humans, there are no verified incidences of them attacking people. In Spain, the population of Iberian wolves – a subspecies of the grey wolf – is thought to number 1,000-2,000 in the north, with a few tiny, isolated populations in the south. José Luis risked a slow shutter-speed to reveal the moonlit sky and conjure up the atmosphere of the place. He switched from using his Nikon D2X to a Hasselblad so he could get the exact framing that he had in mind. What José Luis hopes is that his picture, "showing the wolf's great agility and strength", will become an image that can be used to show just how beautiful the Iberian wolf is and how the Spanish can be proud to have such an emblematic animal.

Police told to mind their language

The "Evenin' all" greeting made famous by TV character Dixon of Dock Green could be consigned to the history books by official guidance that advises police officers to take care when referring to the time of day, it has been reported. According to one police force, "evening" is a "subjective" term that can vary depending on a person's culture or nationality. Other words that officers are urged to take care when using include "child" and "homosexual", the Sunday Telegraph reported.

Prostate Cancers

Prostate cancer is now the most commonly diagnosed cancer of UK men. The prostate is a small, walnut-sized gland situated near the bladder in men - it produces one component of semen. There are 35,000 cases of prostate cancer diagnosed in the UK each year. If found early, while still confined to the gland itself, chances of survival are excellent, and modern surgical techniques, combined with drugs such as Viagra, mean that life-saving operations don't have to mean the end of sex lives. Professor Alan Horwich, is based at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London and the Institute of Cancer Research, where he carries out research funded by Cancer Research UK. He said: "There are a broad range of prostate cancers, some of which are extremely gentle and indolent, which may not cause any significant ill health. "Others have the ability to spread to other parts of the body and cause damage there." He added: "If prostate cancer is caught at a time when it is confined to the prostate, generally it can be cured by radiotherapy and surgery." The first sign of prostate cancer is usually problems passing water - usually an increased frequency or difficulty maintaining a full stream. However, these symptoms are shared with benign prostate enlargement. The symptoms are caused by the growth of cells, whether malignant or benign, pushing against the urethra, the thin tube which links the bladder to the penis. Other symptoms to look out for are: Painful urination or ejaculation, Blood in urine or semen, Pain in lower back, hips or thighs, Of course, all of these symptoms could be caused by something else, for example infection - but should be investigated. The doctor has several methods to check for the presence of prostate cancer. The simplest of these is the digital rectal examination, in which a gloved finger is inserted into the rectum, through which an enlarged prostate can be felt. Blood tests are the next step - prostate cancers cause the levels of certain chemicals in the blood to rise. More sophisticated tests include the use of ultrasound scans, and x-rays. CAUSES- The causes of prostate cancer are not yet understood. However, there are certain things which place some men at higher risk of developing the disease than others. These include other family members who have had prostate cancer. There is some suggestion that a fat-rich diet may contribute to prostate cancer, but this is not proven. Studies linking the cancer to vasectomy, an operation to remove a man's fertility, are contradictory. TREATMENTS- The key decision in prostate cancer is whether or not to treat at all. In many older men, the cancer progresses so slowly that surgery and other treatments may cause more harm than good. However, for those whose cancer is more aggressive, either already spreading or liable to spread beyond the prostate, surgery is usually the first option. A prostatectomy means that the prostate gland is removed, normally along with small parts of the lymphatic system near the gland. Unfortunately, the operation often causes nerve damage which can make it nigh-on impossible for men to achieve erection afterwards, or maintain complete control over urination. However, modern "nerve-sparing" surgical techniques - combined with drugs such as Viagra - mean that the effects on both function and quality of life can be minimised. As well as surgery, another option for doctors is radiotherapy which will be precisely targeted on the pelvic area. And doctors are also tackling prostate cancer using the body's own hormones. Prostate cells, including cancerous ones, are sensitive to levels of certain male hormones, and can be rendered far less active if levels are reduced. However, one unwanted by-product of this is to lessen the natural sex drive of the patient. The main advances in prostate cancer treatment are being made in surgery and radiotherapy. Surgeons are learning how to remove the prostate without causing the problematic nerve damage which was inevitable in the past. And radiotherapy technology advances mean that far higher doses can be targeted more precisely on the prostate, killing more cancer cells with fewer treatments. Recent advances include the use of a technique called brachytherapy. There are two major methods of prostate brachytherapy, permanent seed implantation and high dose rate (HDR) temporary brachytherapy. Permanent seed implants involve injecting approximately 100 radioactive seeds into the prostate gland. They give off their cancer-killing radiation at a low dose rate over several weeks or months, and the seeds remain in the prostate gland permanently. HDR temporary brachytherapy instead involves placing very tiny plastic catheters into the prostate gland, and then giving a series of radiation treatments through these catheters. Another option is High Intensity Focused Ultrasound, which uses sound waves to "melt" away the cancer. -(my view)-my wife loves touching and playing with my balls, penis and prostate-so I'm ok anything feels out of sorts and she'll tell me:) plus she works in a hospital to :D BUT I'd like all men to(a least every month)to take time out to feel your nuts and prostate or if you have a partner.......ask them if they'll help or examine you......don't be shy,i always say"BETTER ALIVE THEN DEAD"and not all men know this.........but men can get breast cancer to,so check your chest tissue to

Call For Migrant Fund

authorities have told a House of Lords select committee that £250m should be set aside to support areas under pressure from immigration. The Local Government Association (LGA), representing 400 councils in England and Wales, said a contingency fund would help shore up public services. The LGA also called for a change to the system used to measure migration. Leaders from Westminster, Slough and Boston councils gave evidence at the immigration inquiry. 'Real grasp' Sir Simon Milton, chairman of the LGA, said he told the committee that while the country benefited from migration, the benefits were being felt nationally and the costs felt locally. There needed to be a significant improvement in how the numbers coming in were counted, he said. "We need to ensure those councils that are getting big increases have enough money to pay for public services," he said. He highlighted language classes, housing and the turnover of pupils in schools as areas which can come under pressure. He also said he wanted other sources, such as GP registrations and National Insurance numbers, to be used to get a clearer picture of migration movements. Mick Gallagher, chief executive of Boston Council in Leicestershire, told the select committee: "We have experienced a significant growth that has been completely under-represented." A low unemployment rate, lots of work on the land and reasonably priced housing have attracted a large number of workers to the area. He cited Boston's estimated population as 79,000 - about a quarter higher than the official estimate of 58,000. He said the council had looked at other sources including the number of children in schools with English as a second language which he estimates stands at 50%. "It's very difficult to know who you have got living in a community at any one time and to try to determine the cost of that in financial terms is extremely difficult," he said. Hidden population Westminster, home to Victoria coach station, a gateway for eastern Europeans seeking employment in the UK, has long been campaigning for a change in the way London's population is calculated. It says current methodology is flawed and in Westminster that at least 11,000 short-term migrants at any one time are missed out by official estimates. It has also estimated a further 13,000 illegal immigrants are living there. The council does not receive funding for the hidden population and says it loses up to £18m in government grants as well, Tracy Turner, from the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives and Senior Managers (Solace), told BBC News ahead of the hearing that the greatest need was for clear, simple information, but she said there was no money in council budgets for this. This meant eastern Europeans did not know to register with a GP and instead were going straight to hospital, she said. Some also decided against sending their children to the local Catholic school thinking they were fee-paying as they often are in Eastern Europe, she said. Of the recent influx of migrant workers particularly in rural areas, she said: "It's an issue for a lot of councils but it's not a problem. "I think people are genuinely concerned to ensure that any new arrivals are able to integrate and get housing and employment, and become part of the local community. "This applies to Eastern Europeans as much as people moving into new towns from other parts of the UK." (my view)-Fuck them off back to their own country, because when they get here they break the law and sponge off us and GIVEN jobs that are taken away from us(the English people) just so companies can save a few pounds-it may sound harsh but its the truth, since the first fucker came over crime HAS climed.......and this is a FACT that people are ignorant about........92% of all crime in england are coursed by Brown people ie:paki's,muslims, indians ect

'Bedroom snooper' row over census

(JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT THE GOVERNMENT CAN'T GET ANYMORE INTRUSIVE,THEY WANT US TO REVEAL OUR BEDROOM ACTIVITIES) Ministers will invade peoples' privacy by asking "intrusive" questions in the census, the Conservatives are claiming. When the 2011 survey is conducted everyone in the UK will have to answer the questions or face fines. Details will be sought about the number of bedrooms in peoples' homes and information about "overnight visitors". The Tories said this would amount to "bedroom snooping" but ministers said all questions would be justified in the public interest. The census, which is conducted every 10 years, is designed to give an accurate snapshot of demographic and social changes in the UK. The 2011 survey is set to be carried out on 27 March 2011. Officials are planning to introduce new methodology and ask a wider range of questions after the 2001 survey was sharply criticised. 'Invading privacy' For the first time, people will be asked to provide details of the number of bedrooms they have as well as the names, sex and birth dates of any overnight guests in their homes. Other new questions include how well people can speak English, the date overseas nationals entered the UK, how people define their national identity and whether they are in civil partnerships. Those who do not complete the census risk being prosecuted while those giving false answers face being fined. The Conservatives said the nature of the some of the questions amounted to a breach of privacy. "An increasingly invasive and intrusive census will erode public support, cost more and result in a less accurate survey," said shadow Cabinet Office minister Nick Hurd. "These 'bedroom snoopers' are yet another sign of how the Labour government has no respect for the privacy of law-abiding citizens." The details of the census must be approved by Parliament in advance. The Office for National Statistics has published a list of specimen questions and said it does not expect any major changes to them. Ministers have said the questions were decided following extensive consultation and take into account the importance of the information requested as well as whether it was acceptable to ask for it.

'Veggie' spider shuns meat diet

--------The spiders have to dodge ants to get to the leaf tips--------- A spider that dines almost exclusively on plants has been described by scientists. It is the first-known predominantly vegetarian spider; all of the other known 40,000 spider species are thought to be mainly carnivorous. Bagheera kiplingi, which is found in Central America and Mexico, bucks the meat-eating trend by feasting on acacia plants. The research is published in the journal Current Biology. The herbivorous spider was filmed on high-definition camera. Running the gauntlet The jumping arachnid, which is 5-6mm long, has developed a taste for the tips of the acacia plants - known as Beltian bodies - which are packed full of protein. But to reach this leafy fare, the spider has to evade the attention of ants, which live in the hollow spines of the tree. The ants and acacia trees have co-evolved to form a mutually beneficial relationship: the aggressive ants protect the trees from predators, swarming to attack any invaders; and in return for acting as bodyguards, the ants get to gorge on the acacias' Beltian bodies themselves. But the crafty Bagheera kiplingi has found a way to exploit this symbiotic relationship. One of the study's authors, Professor Robert Curry, from Villanova University, Pennsylvania, told BBC News: "The spiders basically dodge the ants. "The spiders live on the plants - but way out on the tips of the old leaves, where the ants don't spend a lot of time, because there isn't any food on those leaves." But when they get hungry, the spiders head to the newer leaves, and get ready to run the ant gauntlet. Professor Curry said: "And they wait for an opening - they watch the ants move around, and they watch to see that there are not any ants in the local area that they are going after. "And then they zip in and grab one of these Beltian bodies and then clip it off, hold it in their mouths and run away. "And then they retreat to one of the undefended parts of the plant to eat it." Like other species of jumping spider, Bagheera kiplingi has keen eyesight, is especially fast and agile and is thought to have good cognitive skills, which allows it to "hunt" down this plant food. Fierce competition The spider's herbivorous diet was first discovered in Costa Rica in 2001 by Eric Olsen from Brandeis University, and was then independently observed again in 2007 by Christopher Meehan, at that time an undergraduate student at Villanova University The team then collaborated to describe the spider for the first time in this Current Biology paper. Professor Curry said he was extremely surprised when he found out about its unusual behaviour. He said: "This is the only spider we know that deliberately only goes after plants." While some spiders will occasionally supplement their diet with a little nectar or pollen, Bagheera kiplingi's diet is almost completely vegetarian - although occasionally topped up with a little ant larvae at times. Professor Curry said there were numerous reasons why this spider might have turned away from meaty meals. He said: "Competition in the tropics is pretty fierce so there are always advantages to doing what someone else isn't already doing. "They are jumping spiders, so they don't build a web to catch food, so they have to catch their prey through pursuit. And the Beltian bodies are not moving - they are stuck - so it is a very predictable food supply." Acacias also produce leaves throughout the year - even through the dry season - which would make them attractive. And Professor Curry added: "Because the plants are protected by ants, they have none of their own chemical defences that other plants do."

'Giant' orb web spider discovered

-----Male Nephila spiders look tiny in comparison to "giant" females----- A new and rare species of "giant" orb web spider has been discovered in Africa and Madagascar. In the journal Plos One, researchers describe Nephila komaci as the largest web spinning spider known to science. Only the females of this groups of species are giants, with a leg span of up to 12cm (4.7in); the male spiders are tiny by comparison. -----Adult Human Hand----- Scientists say the female spiders are capable of spinning webs that reach up to 1m (3ft 3in) in diameter. Orb-weaving spiders are a widespread group which take their name from the round webs they typically spin. The new spider was identified by Matjaz Kuntner, a biologist from the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and his colleague Jonathan Coddington, from the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC. Dr Kuntner told BBC News that the discovery was "very unusual" because Nephila spiders were so well-studied and so large. But this species is so elusive that even Dr Kuntner has not seen one live. He was able to identify the species from a specimen he first examined in 2000. The giant female was in a collection belonging to the Plant Protection Research Institute in Pretoria, South Africa. "It did not match any described species," said Dr Kuntner. In his search through more than 2,500 samples from 37 museums, no further specimens turned up and he assumed the spider must be extinct. But when a colleague in South Africa found three more of the spiders, it became apparent that they belonged to this same new species. The discovery will enable scientists to study the evolution of the dramatic size difference between male and female Nephila spiders. Dr Kuntner explained that the widely accepted theory was that evolutionary pressure was causing female "gigantism", with the females increasing in size in order to produce larger numbers of offspring. He and his colleague, Jonathan Coddington, from the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC, fear the rare spider might be endangered. "Its range is restricted and all known localities lie within two endangered biodiversity hotspots: Maputaland and Madagascar," said Dr Coddington. Dr Kuntner named the species in honour of his best friend and fellow scientist Andrej Komac, who recently died in an accident.

Rescues

(Anyone who is not touched by this story and its accompanying image doesn't deserve to be a part of the human race,in my opinion----------MAX----------)The Jesusita Fire in Santa Barbara, CA, last week caused these two to take shelter together. The fawn is 3 days old and the bobcat about 3 weeks. The fawn came from somewhere in the fire and the bobcat from Carpenteria. They immediately bonded and snuggled together under a desk in the Santa Barbara County Dispatch Office for several hours. The bobcat kitten was rescued near Arnold Schwarzenegger's ranch, where it was dehydrated and near death. They rescued the fawn during last week's wildfire. Although wild animals, especially of separate species, are never placed together due to regulations, in this emergency situation, they had no choice. During the mayhem of the fire, they were forced to put animals anywhere they could, since they had run out of crates large enough for the fawn. The kitten ran to the fawn, and it was instant bonding.-Thankyou Max For This Article-

Government opens data to public

An ambitious new website that will open up government data to the public will launch in beta, or pilot, form in December. Reams of anonymous data about schools, crime and health could all be included. Data.gov.uk has been developed by Sir Tim Berners Lee, founder of the web, and Professor Nigel Shadbolt at the University of Southampton. It is designed to be similar to the Obama administration's data.gov project, run by Vivek Kundra. Mr Kundra is Chief Information Officer in the US. The American site, while not yet comprehensive, is already up and running, with improvements fuelled by user feedback. US citizens can either view the data completely raw, or they can access widgets and other tools provided by the site to create their own charts, maps or snapshots of specific information. The British cabinet was briefed in September about data.gov's ambition to be a one-stop-shop for data collected by the government. At the moment a very early beta version is accessible only by a select group. Prime Minister Gordon Brown has voiced his support, and Professor Shadbolt told the BBC he was hopeful that it would "survive" a change of government. Only anonymous data will be made available - there will be no personal information included. Finding patterns "An accountable government needs evidence-based policies," said Prof Shadbolt. "But traditionally only the people seen fit to understand data have been accountants and MPs." Data.gov is built with semantic web technology, which will enable the data it offers to be drawn together into links and threads as the user searches. "During a typhoid outbreak in the nineteenth century a doctor plotted where outbreaks occurred and traced the disease back to one well," explained Professor Shadbolt. "With data.gov we will also be able to look for patterns." Prof Shadbolt also expects that visitors to data.gov will want to make their own mash-ups from the information available. Data hugging It may seem unusual for a new government website to receive such fanfare, but what's interesting about data.gov.uk is the culture change that it represents, say its creators. Traditionally authorities foster a "data hugging mentality", which is wrong argues Prof Shadbolt. "A public body has a duty to publish unless there is a significant reason not to," he said. He cited the census, the land registry and Ordnance Survey data as among the publicly collected information that should be freely available. "What you find if you deal with people in government departments is that they hug their database, hold it really close, so that they can build a beautiful website to present it," said Sir Tim Berners-Lee earlier this year. "I would like to suggest: sure, make a beautiful website, but first, give us - all of us - the unadulterated data. We have to ask for raw data now." (my view)-LOL Do they really expect us to believe they will tell the truth, come on people its the government.....the site will be government run! NEARLY ALL THE DATA WILL BE FAKE TO COVER THEIR LIES,SCANDALS AND STEALING YOUR MONEY

Millions tricked by 'scareware'

Online criminals are making millions of pounds by convincing computer users to download fake anti-virus software, internet security experts claim. Symantec says more than 40 million people have fallen victim to the "scareware" scam in the past 12 months. The download is usually harmful and criminals can sometimes use it to get the victim's credit card details. The firm has identified 250 versions of scareware, and criminals are thought to earn more than £750,000 each a year. Franchised out Scareware sellers use pop-up adverts deliberately designed to look legitimate, for example, using the same typefaces as Microsoft and other well-known software providers. They appear, often when the user is switching between websites, and falsely warn that a computer's security has been compromised. If the user then clicks on the message they are directed towards another site where they can download the fake anti-virus software they supposedly need to clean up their computer - for a fee of up to £60. Con Mallon, from Symantec, told the BBC the apparent fix could have a double impact on victims. "Obviously, you're losing your own hard-earned cash up front, but at the back end of that, if you're transacting with these guys online you're offering them credit card details, debit card details and other personal information," he said. "That's obviously very valuable because these cyber criminals can try to raid those accounts themselves or they can then pass them on or sell them to others who ultimately will try to use that information to their benefit not yours." The findings were revealed in a report written following Symantec analysis of data collected from July 2008 to June 2009. Symantec said 43 million people fell for such scams during that period. It has become so popular that the rogue software has been franchised out. Mr Mallon said some scareware took the scam a step further. "[They] could hold your computer to ransom where they will stop your computer working or lock up some of your personal information, your photographs or some of your Word documents. "They will extort money from you at that point. They will ask you to pay some additional money and they will then release your machine back to you." The scam is hard for police or other agencies to investigate because the individual sums of money involved are very small. Therefore, experts say users must protect themselves with common sense and legitimate security software. 'Steal your identity' Tony Neate, from Get Safe Online, told the BBC the threats presented by the internet had changed in recent years. "Where we used to say protect your PC... we've now got to look at ourselves, making sure we're protected against the con men who are out there," he said. "They want you to help them infect your machine. When they've infected your machine it's possibly no longer your machine - you've got no control over it. "Then what they're looking to do is take away your identity, steal bits of your identity, or even get some financial information from you." He added: "They used to be 16-year-olds in their bedrooms causing damage with viruses. Now those 16-year-olds have grown up [and] they're looking for money, they're looking for information." (my view)-I use (avast)-its free, has 9 stars out of 10(4 stars being norton)-it updates its virus datebase daily, one year of use then all you do is re-register your code-free each year.....thats it:)then after you register-a few seconds later your virus datebase updates then you don't have to register for another year, its ALL FREE here is the link for avast http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

15 Year Old Disabled Student Beaten Up By Cop

A 15-year-old student at a special needs school got a lesson in police brutality. Marshawn Pitts, who attends the Academy for Learning in the south suburb of Dolton, was slammed into a locker and thrown to the ground by an unidentified police officer as he was taking Pitts to the principals office for an untucked shirt. A security camera installed in one of the schools halls caught the entire confrontation, which ended with a broken nose for Pitts, who lay motionless while the officer sat on him. The fight allegedly broke out after the officer asked the student to tuck his shirt in, a policy enforced in the school. The boys attorney, Ed Manzke, says the video will help Pitts cause. Were fortunate that it [the beating] was caught on videotape, he told the Chicago Tribune. There is nothing [the officer] can say that could justify [the beating]. The video shows the police officer and the student walking down a hall. After saying something to a woman standing there, Pitts is violently pushed against the lockers by the officer, who then proceeds to pin the student to the floor. As the fight starts, students in adjacent classrooms try to walk out of class, but are blocked by other teachers. Once the student is on the floor, two other men run up to the officer, but its unclear if they were trying to block or help him.

The Police Killed Him-FOR NO REASON-and lied about the medics and protesters getting in the way

I took a portion of news(link to this huge article is at the bottom,i know max would like to read)for you to read(read how the police have lied and the killer wore a balaclava and no number-----Initial eyewitness accounts Memorial to Ian Tomlinson outside the Bank of England on 2 April 2009. At the time many believed he had been a protester According to eyewitnesses, reports of missiles raining down while police tried to assist are "completely false." Witnesses say it was protesters, not police, who provided the initial first aid, and who telephoned for medical help, as well as requesting it with a megaphone. "The only attitude of people in the crowd was to help this guy," one eyewitness said. Fran Legg, a politics student at Queen Mary, University of London, told The Evening Standard that it was a friend of hers who put Tomlinson in the recovery position. She said that around eight riot police arrived on the scene with police medics, who stood around Tomlinson. The Standard reported that, "by the time police medics took over from her friend, the man had fallen unconscious." Witnesses stated that one or two plastic bottles were thrown by people who were unaware of Tomlinson's situation, but other protesters told them to stop.[55] The Times wrote that an analysis of television footage and photographs showed just one bottle, that was probably plastic, being thrown in the area.Eyewitness Jasper Jackson, who photographed Tomlinson just before he collapsed, said, "There were a couple of people throwing bottles in the direction. A bottle smashed near a Starbucks. Protesters told them to stop it. In fact they were threatening to kill other protesters if they did anything to disrupt the treatment."-----LINK TO THE ARTICLE - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Ian_Tomlinson

Katie Price up for Mum of the Year-WTF

Katie Price has been shortlisted for Celebrity Mum of the Year, despite her very public marriage break-up. The controversial glamour model was nominated by the public alongside 19 other celebrity mums for this year's Bounty Celebrity Mum of the Year. It has been a turbulent year for Price - she split from pop star Peter Andre, her husband of three-and-a-half years. She also ran a marathon, published a best-selling novel, was dropped by her management company of five years and caused offence with insensitive comments about her breast surgery scars. Price is up against Samantha Cameron who had to deal with the tragic death of her son Ivan earlier this year. Mrs Cameron, who supported husband David at the recent Conservative party conference in Manchester, also has to look after her two young children. Other nominees include three former Spice Girls Mel B, Emma Bunton, and Geri Halliwell. However, there is no room this year for Victoria Beckham who might have slipped off the nation's radar since her move to Los Angeles. Last year's winner Suzanne Shaw joins Myleene Klass, Tess Daly, Sophie Ellis Bextor and Charlotte Church on the shortlist. Kerry Katona - who was dropped by supermarket Iceland after she was exposed taking drugs by the News of World - failed to make this year's shortlist.(my view)-I fucking can not believe what i read.....i had to read it twice, this bitch cheated over and over until her(now ex husband)devorced her over her everything she put him through,he never cheated once, now i am no fan of them both but for fucks sake.....who in their right mind would give her an award for being mum of the year!,she a drug addict(alcoholic)bisexual, always going to strip clubs-kissing and groping girls....shes sick!.....photo have not been uploaded to this entry(or any other) due to discusing images.......these are:KISSING A GIRL PASSIONATLY AND A GUY GROPING HER ASS.....WHILE SHES HOLDING HER CHILD,DANCING NAKED IN A ROOM FULL OF BOYS AND GIRLS,HALF NAKED ON A BEACH PLAYING WITH HERSELF WHILE PEOPLE WATCH,SHOVING THINGS UP HERSELF WHILE OTHERS GET OFF WHILE WATCHING,DOING RUDE JESTURES IN FRONT OF HER KID,PLAYING WITH HER TITS ECT WHILE HER KID IS NEXT TO HER EATING.....and much more..........AND YOU WANT TO GIVE HER A FUCKING AWARD!award for what? being an unfit mother, being unstable.........o'heres a bit of news.....you know she said she was raped by a celeb?........that was a lie because she said"Forget my rape,i'm going to tell about my ex-husbands sex acts!!!!........now...tell me shes freaking insane, unstable,a BIG liar and a fucking STD-ed slagathon!

Balloon boy:Father Is Gulity Of Hoax-but charges may not come until next week

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Investigators pored over e-mails, phone records and financial documents from the home of Richard Heene on Monday as they weighed felony charges and sought to determine who else might have helped the alleged balloon-boy hoax get off the ground. The sheriff's office said its findings will be forwarded to prosecutors next week to decide if Richard and Mayumi Heene should be charged with falsely reporting that their 6-year-old child had drifted away in a large home-built helium balloon to drum up publicity for a reality TV show. But the investigation could reach beyond the Heenes, possibly into the world of reality-show promotions. Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden said documents show that a media outlet had agreed to pay the Heenes. Alderden did not name the organization but said it was in an industry that blurs "the line between entertainment and news." It was not clear whether the deal was signed before or after the alleged hoax, or whether the media outlet was a possible conspirator. If so, the organization could face charges as well. The Heenes are amateur storm chasers who apparently wanted to star in a reality show that focused on a range of absurd experiments, such as attracting UFOs with a weather balloon, launching a model rocket into space and conducting an electromagnetic analysis of a terminally ill patient's spirit before death. Robert Thomas, a collaborator who worked with Richard Heene on the idea, provided an e-mail to the Web site Gawker.com outlining his plan for the show. The sheriff's department questioned Thomas on Sunday night after he revealed that Heene was planning a media stunt to promote the show, according to the researcher's lawyer, Linda Lee. Lee said investigators told her Thomas does not face charges and is not a person of interest in the case. Thomas has said he had no idea that a possible hoax would involve the Heene children. With television cameras and reporters set up outside the Heene home, defense lawyer David Lane stressed that the Heenes are willing to turn themselves in to avoid the spectacle of a public arrest. Lane declined to say directly whether he believes the incident was a hoax but said the Heenes are innocent unless convicted. The Heenes remained holed up in their home until midafternoon, when they left in a pickup truck without commenting. If prosecutors "can prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt, that's one thing. If they can't prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt, that's another," Lane told The Associated Press. Alderden said he is seeking charges against the Heenes that include conspiracy, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, making a false report to authorities and attempting to influence a public servant. The most serious charges are felonies and carry a maximum sentence of six years in prison. Alderden said authorities would be seeking restitution for the costs, though he did not have an estimate. Alderden said the children were still with the parents and that child protective services had been contacted to investigate their well-being. It's also possible that Heene could face federal charges because he called the Federal Aviation Administration to report his son missing in the balloon. Those charges could include lying to the federal government, a count similar to the one that sent Martha Stewart to prison in her stock-fraud case. The balloon spectacle was not the first time Richard Heene has run afoul of the law. He was arrested in April 1997 and charged with three misdemeanors - vandalism, vehicle tampering and disturbing the peace, according to court documents. He pleaded no contest to vandalism and was sentenced to 30 days in jail, two years probation and ordered to pay $100 restitution, according to Frank Mateljan, a spokesman for the Los Angeles city attorney's office. The other two charges were dropped. Mateljan said he did not know who the victim was, and no details on the case were available. It's still not known who else was working with Heene to launch the reality show. The sheriff's department refused to answer questions Monday. Heene has a profile listed on a Web site that helps people get cast in reality shows, and the site said he last logged on in late September - around the time investigators said the hoax was taking root. The site lists his occupation as a research scientist and general contractor with a high school education. The Heenes twice appeared on ABC's "Wife Swap," including an episode in March in which they talk about their belief that they are the descendants of aliens and discuss their approach to parenting. At one point, Richard Heene is seen screaming and throwing a drink in a participant's face. The producer of "Wife Swap" had a show in development with the Heenes but said the deal is now off. The TLC cable network also said Heene had pitched a reality show months ago, but it passed on the offer.

Orphan-WARNING:if you have not seen this movie,do not read!

Kate (Vera Farmiga) and John Coleman (Peter Sarsgaard) are experiencing strains in their marriage after Kate's third child - "Jessica" - was stillborn. The loss is particularly hard on Kate, who is still recovering from a drinking habit that cost her her job. As a coping mechanism she has scattered Jessica's ashes in their garden around a white rose bush, with a plaque to remember her by.They adopt Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman), a 9-year-old Russian girl they had met, from the local orphanage. While Kate and John's deaf-mute daughter Max (Aryana Engineer) embraces Esther almost immediately, their son Daniel (Jimmy Bennett) is less welcoming. Kate grows suspicious when Esther, who watched Kate and John have sex, expresses far more knowledge of sex and its slang than would be expected for a child her age. Not long after Esther arrives, she pushes a schoolmate down a playground slide, who had picked on her, breaking her ankle. Max saw Esther shove the girl, but covers for Esther by saying that the girl "slipped". However, she is further alarmed when Sister Abigail (CCH Pounder), the head of the orphanage, warns her and John about Esther's tendency to be around when things go wrong. Esther overhears this and later kills Sister Abigail with a hammer to the head. She convinces Max (puts a gun to her head) to help her hide the body and the hammer. Daniel sees Esther and Max descending from his treehouse from behind a rock, not knowing they hid the hammer there. Later that night, Esther threatens to cut off Daniel's "hairless little prick before he knows what its used for" if he tells anyone what he saw. Kate is told by the orphanage that they cannot find any record of the Russian orphanage Esther came from. However, John does not believe her, despite continued ominous behavior by Esther. That night, Esther deliberately picks flowers for Kate that are from Jessica's plant and Kate pushes her to the ground. Later, Esther breaks her own arm in John's vice and convinces John that Kate broke it in the scuffle from earlier. On Esther's first day back at school, she slips Kate's SUV into neutral, nearly killing Max. Badly shaken, Kate buys two bottles of wine, but at the last minute pours one of them down the drain and leaves the other full. Kate learns that Esther was housed at a mental institution in Estonia called the Saarne Institute, but when she expresses misgivings to John, he and her counselor think that Kate is relapsing into her drinking habit. After John produces the other bottle Kate bought the night before, he threatens to leave her unless she gets help. Daniel learns of the hammer from Max and decides to get it and go to the police. However, Esther sets the treehouse on fire, intending to get rid of the evidence and kill Daniel. Daniel escapes by falling out of the tree, and gets a severe neck injury. Esther tries to finish him off by smashing a brick over his head, but Max shoves her out of the way just in time. Esther again tries to kill him at the hospital by smothering him with a pillow. As doctors rush to save Daniel, Kate angrily knocks Esther down for doing that and is sedated by doctors. That night, Esther tries to seduce a drunk and sad John. John realizes Kate was telling the truth all along and threatens to call the orphanage. Esther, angry at being spurned, ransacks her room and later stabs John to death. Max witnesses this and hides in her laundry hamper. As Kate is coming out of sedation, she gets a call from the Saarne Institute's director, Dr. Värava (Karel Roden), who reveals that Esther isn't a 9-year-old girl at all, but a 33-year-old woman named Leena Klammer. She has hypopituitarism, a disorder that stunted her physical growth, and has spent most of her life posing as a little girl. The doctor tells Kate that Esther is dangerously psychotic, and Kate should rush home to her family. Kate rushes home, where Esther shoots her in the arm before searching for Max. Their chase takes them outside to a frozen pond, where Kate and Esther struggle before falling through broken ice from the knife Esther tried to stab Kate with. Kate crawls out of the hole, followed by Esther, who begs for her life, addressing Kate as "Mommy". Kate angrily responds that she is not her mother and kicks Esther in the face, breaking her neck and sending her back into the pond to drown

Halloween dummy was real dead body

Residents in a block of flats left a dead body on a neighbour's patio for three days because they thought it was a Halloween display. Mostafa Mahmoud Zayed had apparently been dead since Monday. Cameraman Austin Raishbrook, owner of RMG News, told the Los Angeles Times he was at the scene in Marina del Rey, Southern California, on Thursday when the authorities arrived.

Abuse cases piling up after Baby P

More than 150 of the worst cases of child abuse have come to light since the Baby P tragedy, a survey has revealed. In the past six months alone authorities launched nearly two investigations a week into the most worrying incidents, primarily those in which children died or were seriously injured as a result of abuse or neglect. The national survey by the Press Association suggests there has been no fall in the number of children coming to harm since the death of Baby P - now named as Peter Connelly - in August 2007. Responding to the research, a social workers' leader warned that there were "Baby Peters in every local authority" and said the failings in the case could be repeated in many other areas. A total of 348 "serious case reviews" have been launched since April 2006, one month after Peter was born, results from 120 councils in England showed. A serious case review must be carried out after a child dies where abuse or neglect is known or suspected in order to see whether lessons can be learned. They can be also conducted in cases where children are killed by a parent with a mental illness, seriously sexually abused, or suffer a potentially life-threatening injury through abuse or neglect. There were 95 serious case reviews launched in 2006-07, 98 in 2007-08, 106 in 2008-09, and 49 have been started since April this year, the survey found. Some 23 local safeguarding children boards - made up of experts from councils, health trusts, the police and other agencies - have had to carry out five or more of the inquiries in the past three-and-a-half years. They include Haringey in north London, which was severely criticised for failing to prevent the death of 17-month-old Peter at the hands of his mother, her lover and his brother.(my view)-Yet another reason WE DO NOT NEED A GOVERNMENT...they are stupid, greedy fuckers without a thought what so ever...un-educated shits that do NOT protect babies ect.......only themselves-WE NEED A PROFIT FREE GOVERNMENT AND WORLD LEADER/S TO BRING THIS WORLD BACK FROM THE BRINK OF DESTRUCTION THAT THEY ARE MAKING,WE NEED A FREE WORLD,WE NEED TO LIVE FREE AGAIN(LIKE NATURE INTENDED US TO BE),WE NEED SOMEONE WITH A GREED-FREE BRAIN,WE NEED ME....YOU ALL NEED ME AS PRESIDENT!

Recessions are good for you,and other health ironies

While long-term economic growth is undoubtedly good for a nation's health, there is evidence that short-term economic downturns can actually help to boost our health. One study, published in 2000, found that a 1% rise in unemployment reduced the death rate by 0.5%. That same research also revealed that during a recession, people cut back on smoking, alcohol and eating out. Fear of unemployment also means we are likely to do more exercise, visit the doctor and generally take better care of ourselves. Adults are supposed to do at least 30 minutes of light exercise four to five times a week - but can exerting ourselves actually lead to health problems? The answer is a resounding yes, it can. For one thing, research has shown that a growing number of people are exercising too much, not exercising properly (which can lead to joint problems later in life) or feeling excessively guilty if they miss a workout. A study out of Canberra even found that an obsession with exercise can raise a person's risk of developing an eating disorder. We should all work out regularly - just make sure you do it properly. It is well worth booking in an hour or more with a personal trainer to set you on the right track. We take them for granted and can take them every time we feel a tiny niggle - but everyday painkillers can pose a serious risk to your health if you misunderstand or misuse them. Paracetamol, for example, has been linked with liver damage, while high doses of aspirin threaten the stomach and kidneys and ibuprofen could raise the risk of heart disease in some patients. Always check with your pharmacist or doctor to make sure anything you take is safe and does not interfere with medication you already use. First of all - it's not good to be fat. People who are overweight or obese are at a much greater risk of developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes and a legion of other potentially life-threatening conditions. However, there is evidence which suggests body fat can - occasionally - insulate you from illness. A Danish research team claims that men and women with thighs over 60cm in circumference have a lower risk of heart disease and premature death. It is thought that those of us with narrow thighs may not have enough muscle to properly deal with insulin. Is there any drug with more stigma attached to it than thalidomide? Calamitously given to pregnant women in the 1950s and 60s to cure morning sickness, the drug caused deformities and long-term health problems in thousands of unfortunate individuals in what has been called the biggest medical tragedy of all time. However, did you know that thalidomide is still being used today? It is not, obviously, given to pregnant women, but it has been used to treat leprosy and tuberculosis, while tests are ongoing to discover its effectiveness against HIV and some forms of cancer. Too much alcohol can lead to heart disease, depression, cancer and - in the most extreme cases, death. But cutting out alcohol completely means you may be depriving yourself of some surprising health benefits. Moderate consumption of alcohol is known to reduce the risk of conditions such as heart disease. Red wine, for example, contains antioxidants, which attack disease-causing free radicals, while gin was recently linked in one study to the prevention of arthritis. Just remember not to overdo things! We use it to makes us prettier, but make-up could in fact do your looks more harm than good. According to a recent survey, one in four women put their health and looks at risk by using out-of-date beauty products. One of the most commonly overused items is mascara (well, it's not cheap, is it?); 92% of women surveyed by the College of Optometrists said they keep their mascara for longer than six months, despite the fact that it is a breeding ground for bacteria and can lead to, irony of ironies, an unsightly eye infection. Our cupboards may well be full of anti-bacterial sprays and other cleaning agents that keep our homes sparkling clean, but did you know that a little bit of dirt is in fact thought to be good for our immune system? The huge upsurge in cases of asthma in developed countries in recent years, for example, is thought to be partly due to the high standards of hygiene, spotless food and high number of cleaning products used in our homes. Exposure to certain infections during childhood is thought to be particularly beneficial. They are believed to help prevent a number of allergic reactions in adulthood as the immune system learns how to deal with foreign invaders in childhood.

Father of boy in balloon saga meets with officers

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – A storm-chasing inventor met with sheriff's officials Saturday amid lingering questions about whether he perpetrated a big hoax when his 6-year-old son vanished into the rafters of his garage while the world thought he was zooming through the sky in a flying saucer-like helium balloon. The saga grew stranger by the day. Richard Heene knocked on the windows of journalists camped outside his home early Saturday and promised a "big announcement" in a few hours, then did an about-face when he told reporters that they should leave questions in a cardboard box on the front doorstep. "Absolutely no hoax. I want your questions in the box," Heene said, waving a cardboard container before going back into his home. A circus-like atmosphere formed outside, including men holding signs and occasionally yelling "balloon boy." One sign read, "Put balloon boy on TV: America's Most Wanted." Other gawkers carried aluminum-foil stovetop popcorn makers that resembled the silvery balloon launched from the family's backyard Thursday, with 6-year-old Falcon Heene believed to be onboard. A man pulled a red wagon with coffee for sale. The sign had "$2" scratched out with a new price of $1. Some neighbors stopped by to drop questions of their own into the box. Falcon's mother, Mayumi Heene, also went to the sheriff's office about two hours after husband did. The couple's three sons remained home, apparently being watched by sheriff's officials. Authorities wouldn't comment on what was happening. "We're trying to figure things out. That's all I can say," sheriff's spokeswoman Eloise Campanella said. Sheriff Jim Alderden has said that he wanted to re-interview the family after Falcon told CNN that "you said we did this for a show" when asked why he didn't come out of his hiding place. Then Falcon got sick during two separate TV interviews when asked why he hid. The balloon was supposed to be tethered to the ground when it lifted off, and no one was supposed to be aboard. A video of the launch shows the family counting down in unison, "3, 2, 1," before Richard Heene pulls a cord, setting the balloon into the air. "Whoa!" one of the boys exclaims. Then his father says in disbelief, "Oh, my God!" He then says to someone, "You didn't put the (expletive) tether down!" and he kicks the wood frame that had held the balloon. Falcon's brother said he saw him inside the compartment before it took off and that's why they thought he was in there when it launched. Heene said he had yelled at Falcon before the launch for getting inside. Alderden thinks it's likely that Falcon ran off because he was scared of getting in trouble, later falling asleep in his hiding spot. He said he doubted that such a hyperactive boy could be ordered to stay quiet for the five hours he was missing. Over the years, Richard Heene has worked as a storm chaser, a handyman and contractor, and an aspiring reality-TV star. He and his family appeared on the ABC reality show "Wife Swap," and the show's producer said it had a show in development with the Heenes but the deal is now off. TLC also said Heene had pitched a reality show to the network months ago, but it passed on the offer. Despite his attempts to get on TV, Heene insisted Saturday that he didn't know what kinds of questions were being asked about him because he didn't have cable. "I'm going to place the box out front. Please write your questions down, because friends are telling me they're saying this and that. I have no idea what the news is saying," Heene said.-----THANKYOU MAX FOR EMAILING ME THIS ARTICLE

Arctic to be 'ice-free in summer'

The Arctic Ocean could be largely ice-free and open to shipping during the summer in as little as ten years' time, a top polar specialist has said. "It's like man is taking the lid off the northern part of the planet," said Professor Peter Wadhams, from the University of Cambridge. Professor Wadhams has been studying the Arctic ice since the 1960s. He was speaking in central London at the launch of the findings of the Catlin Arctic Survey. The expedition trekked across 435km of ice earlier this year. Led by explorer Pen Hadow, the team's measurements found that the ice-floes were on average 1.8m thick - typical of so-called "first year" ice formed during the past winter and most vulnerable to melting. The survey route - to the north of Canada - had been expected to cross areas of older "multi-year" ice which is thicker and more resilient. When the ridges of ice between floes are included, the expedition found an average thickness of 4.8m. Professor Wadhams said: "The Catlin Arctic Survey data supports the new consensus view - based on seasonal variation of ice extent and thickness, changes in temperatures, winds and especially ice composition - that the Arctic will be ice-free in summer within about 20 years, and that much of the decrease will be happening within 10 years. "That means you'll be able to treat the Arctic as if it were essentially an open sea in the summer and have transport across the Arctic Ocean." According to Professor Wadhams, faster shipping and easier access to oil and gas reserves were among short-term benefits of the melting. But in the longer-term, losing a permanent feature of the planet risked accelerated warming, changing patterns of circulation in the oceans and atmosphere, and having unknown effects on ecosystems through the acidification of waters. Pen Hadow and his companions Ann Daniels and Martin Hartley endured ferocious weather - including a wind chill of minus 70 - delayed resupply flights and starvation rations during the expedition from 1 March to 7 May. When I met them on the ice, as part of a BBC team that joined the pick-up flight, all three had lost weight and were evidently tired from the ordeal. The expedition had been blighted by equipment failures. A pioneering radar system, designed to measure the ice while being dragged over the ice, broke down within days. Another device to measure the water beneath the ice never functioned at all. A planet transformed The technical breakdowns forced the team to rely on hand-drilling through the ice which slowed progress and meant the team's planned destination of the North Pole had to be abandoned. Pen Hadow admitted that the expedition had not led to "a giant leap forward in understanding" but had been useful as an incremental step in the science of answering the key questions about the Arctic. His view was backed by Professor Wadhams who said the expedition had provided information about the ice that was not available from satellites and that no submarines had been available to science at that time either. Pen Hadow said he was shocked by the image of how "in my lifetime we're looking at changing how the planet looks from space." He also described how polar explorers were having to change their methods from the days when sledges could be pulled by dogs over the ice. "Dogs can swim but they can't tow a sledge through water which is what's needed now." "Now we have to wear immersion suits and swim and we need sledges that can float. I can foresee needing sledges that are more like canoes that you also pull over the ice." (my view)-OMG.....countries are going to be almost half under water(ie: half of the countries are going to disappear under water) and millions if not billions are going to die........and all they care about is more money and trading! WTF......they don't care about fixing mother but destroying her and us all! DEATH TO THE GOVERNMENTS!ACT NOW AND STAND UP AGAINST THEM AND SAY NO MORE!
