Universities chief demands more money 'because of recession' WTF GREEDY FUCK!

Ministers should spend more public money on universities because of the recession, a leading vice-chancellor said today. Steve Smith, the new president of Universities UK, which represents university heads, warned politicians in his inaugural speech that no government could achieve its goals without a thriving university sector. Speaking to vice-chancellors and David Lammy, the Higher Education Minister, at the UUK conference in Edinburgh, he said: “Universities are fundamental to achieving social and economic progress, and to establishing the kind of country that can compete and prosper in the future. But for the UK to win the race to the top, the university sector needs investment. “UUK’s position is that we need to establish that case before we get into discussions about where the money comes from.” Professor Smith, who is Vice-Chancellor of Exeter University, admitted that it would be “unrealistic” to think that all investment should come from the taxpayer. A review of tuition fees is due to begin this autumn and is expected to recommend lifting the £3,000 annual cap on fees. Professor Smith said the health of universities was inextricably entwined with the prosperity and success of Britain. His speech appeared to sound a note of warning to whichever party wins the next general election. He said: “We will not argue merely that higher education should be protected from cuts. We will argue for growth in investment in teaching and research, not despite the current economic crisis but because of it. “This is a case for all parties, not just this Government.” Professor Smith also announced that figures being published next month would show that universities generate £55 billion a year and employ 1 per cent of the workforce. His call for increased investment echoes the findings of a report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The study said that Britain spends below the developed world’s average on higher education, behind countries including France, Canada and the United States, but invests more than the OECD average on schools. Andreas Schleicher, of the OECD education directorate, also warned against cuts in spending during the recession, which he said was the time to invest in the education sector to drive economic recovery.(my view)- Education SHOULD be given/thought FREELY and this topic is like the one we had last year a couple of weeks into this recession......the government DEMANDED a pay rise..........(after they got us into this mess.......-(and in other news)-Pupils shunning university to avoid debts(my view) school and UNI do not teach you anything that you need in real life to be a good human.....today its all study,study,study...for what?...to be a banker or in marketing...RIPPING PEOPLE OFF...its alllllllllllll greed...schools ect..TEACH YOU NOTHING OF IMPORTANCE OR WHAT YOU NEED TO BE A GOOD HUMAN.
