Dexter star Michael C. Hall battles cancer

Actor Michael C. Hall, who stars in US TV show Dexter, has announced that he has been battling cancer and is in remission from the disease. The 38-year-old said he had been diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, which he described as a "treatable and curable condition". His spokesman said Hall was in complete remission but would continue treatment. In his award-nominated role, he plays Dexter Morgan, a Miami police analyst who moonlights as a serial killer. In a statement to People magazine, Hall said: "I feel fortunate to have been diagnosed with an imminently [sic] treatable and curable condition, and I thank my doctors and nurses for their expertise and care". Hall, who also starred in the long-running US drama Six Feet Under, still plans to attend Sunday's Golden Globes, with his wife Jennifer Carpenter - who plays his sister on the show. He is nominated for best dramatic actor, while the show is on the shortlist for best drama. A fifth series of Dexter is due to go into production later in the year.

Otto the world's 'oldest dog' is put to sleep-story update

A dog from Shropshire who was crowned the world's oldest canine has been put to sleep after suffering from stomach cancer. Otto, a Dachshund terrier cross from Reabrook, Shrewsbury, was 20 years and 11 months old. He was recognised as the oldest living dog by Guinness World Records in October and enjoyed playing ball with neighbours' children until recently. His owners Lynn and Peter Jones said he was a "loveable, affectionate rogue". 'Had enough' Mrs Jones, who has had Otto since he was six months old, said she had been crying all day. "We found out yesterday he had a very large tumour in his stomach and last night I felt he was trying to tell us something. "He couldn't sit or lie down comfortably and he was trying to tell us that he'd had enough, so we made the decision to end his suffering and took him to the vet this morning," she said. She added that she felt like she had lost her right arm. Many tributes have since been added to Otto's Facebook page.

'Dinosaur-sized' shark kills tourist in South Africa

A Zimbabwean holidaymaker has been eaten by a gigantic shark off the coast of Cape Town. Witnesses on the beach watched Lloyd Skinner, 37, pulled under the water and dragged out to sea. One onlooker, Gregg Coppen, described the shark as being as "huge" as a "dinosaur", and "longer than a minibus". The Guardian reports Coppen as telling the Cape Times newspaper: "It was this giant shadow heading to something colourful. Then it sort of came out the water and took this colourful lump and went off with it. You could see its whole jaw wrap around the thing which turned out to be a person." Another witness, Kathy Geldenhuys, said: "My husband had just pointed out how far the man was swimming from the other people. He asked what would happen if he was attacked by a shark, because he was so far away. The words were hardly cold when the shark attacked that man. The shark attacked twice; it turned and attacked the man again; I just saw the blood on the water. "Only when it was attacking did I see the fin, but then I could see the whole body under the water. It was a very big shark... It came from below and grabbed the man. Part of his body was gone." Authorities sent four rescue boats and a helicopter to search for the victim. Ian Klopper, a spokesman for the National Sea Rescue Institute, said: "You can rule out any chance of finding him alive. Whether we find body parts, it's very unlikely. We think the shark took everything." The attack occurred at Fish Hoek beach, one of South Africa's most popular holiday destinations. It has prompted calls for an electronic shark warning system to be introduced in the area.(my view)-Well you do wonder into their home.......do they walk into our house?...NO so shut up!

220 jobs axed via video message

Workers at an electronics firm have been left "devastated" after being told in a video message that 220 jobs were being offshored to Korea and the Czech Republic. Unite said Edwards planned to cease all manufacturing at its Burgess Hill and Shoreham-on-sea factories in Sussex. The announcement was made to employees via a video message, which the union said was "tactless". Regional officer Janet Henney said: "This is another example of the UK skilled manufacturing base being decimated for the benefit of a profit-driven private equity company. "They have paid little regard to the UK economy, our skills base and least of all to those who have to go home today and tell their families of their loss. "Another blow has been dealt to British manufacturing with this announcement. The time for this abuse of British jobs must end now." Shaun McHale, senior Unite steward at the Shoreham site, said: "This is a devastating announcement especially given the co-operation that we have given the company over recent years to retain a UK-based skilled workforce."(my view)-This happens time and time again....the bosses ALWAYS say that they look after the British people to will not allow other nationalities steal OUR jobs......but they always do...to save a bit off money as other people(that are NOT from here)work a bit cheaper....that tells us that they were bullshitting from day one,the government and companies DO NOT CARE FOR THE PEOPLE
