US missionaries in Haiti charged with child abduction

Ten US missionaries have been charged with child abduction and criminal conspiracy for trying to smuggle children out of quake-ravaged Haiti.

If convicted they face lengthy jail terms, says the BBC's Paul Adams at the court hearing in Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince. When stopped on the border last Friday, they said they were taking the children to a Dominican Republic orphanage. But it has emerged some of the 33 youngsters had parents who were alive.

'Kidnappers'

The five men and five women, most of them from Idaho, were due to have a hearing earlier in the week, but that was postponed because of a lack of interpreters. Haiti's Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive has labelled the Americans "kidnappers". Residents in the village of Callebas told an Associated Press news agency reporter they had handed their children over through a local orphanage worker who said he was acting on the Americans' behalf. The worker is said to have promised the families that the missionaries would educate their children in neighbouring Dominican Republic. A number of parents in the badly-damaged village said they would find it difficult to provide for their children if they came back. "I am living in a tent with a friend," one parent, Laurentius Lelly, told AP. Mail delivered 19 years late

Royal Mail has delivered a number of letters nearly two decades after they were sent, it was disclosed. The missing mail, dating from 1991, was found at a house that was being renovated. Knife blade 'found in baby shoes'

A discount clothes chain is investigating claims that an inch-long knife blade was found in a pair of baby shoes bought at one of its stores. New father Steven Varley bought the shoes for his four-day-old son Oscar from a Primark store in Chatham, Kent, and described the discovery as "horrendous". Mr Varley, from Folkestone, said he hurt his finger as he took the paper packaging out of the second shoe. He told BBC Kent: "I thought it was a lace I then pulled on the piece of paper and inside the shoe was this razor-sharp blade.

A spokeswoman for Primark said: "Primark is extremely concerned to hear this news and the company is taking urgent action to investigate this issue. "The company cannot comment in detail on this complaint until its inquiries are complete, but the company apologises to the customer for any distress this must have caused. Woman's virginity offer not illegal

A teenager who says she auctioned her virginity online for £24,000 to raise tuition money did not break any laws but it might be risky for her to follow through on the deal, according to police. The anonymous 19-year-old student, who lives in New Zealand, offered her virginity to the highest bidder on www.ineed.co.nz under the name "Unigirl", saying the money will pay her university fees.
