Virgin Media promises to speed up to 100Mbps broadband
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibTmcWgnMjWCX2sRWQKYMMCzrGJx-FmnxQzWoMLiS5WPyca-1VlDqtSRRwyM1d5WZfAU6o9zicLoOv5ppkqF9Fk0jSyrw8_sjAEGz6sDueZuPrHLHhDMFZuWDi0H8Dup8uHHOjyeTf0E4m/s320/VM.jpg)
In some areas Virgin says it will offer even faster speeds of up to 200Mbps.Virgin Media's chief executive, Neil Berkett, said: "There is nothing we can't do with our fibre-optic cable network, and the upcoming launch of our flagship 100Mbps service will give our customers the ultimate broadband experience." The extra-fast service, says Virgin Media, will let customers download a music album in as little as five seconds, as opposed to the 75 seconds the same download would take on a 24Mbps ADSL connection.
Catch-upCurrently, most internet services are provided at speeds from 10Mbps to 50Mbps, depending on the chosen package. A BT spokesman said: "Virgin are playing catch-up as customers are already using 100Mbps over BT's network. It is fair to say we are bigger than them and we are growing faster too." Virgin Media has has 4.1 million broadband customers and added 46,000 over the last quarter, while BT has just over five million subscribers - some 25% more - and is currently growing at around twice the rate of Virgin Media, adding 102,000 customers in the last quarter.
Revenues upVirgin Media has not yet said where it will first offer the 100Mbps service, which is expected to be deployed across Virgin's entire cable network by the end of 2011.
It would also not say how much it would cost. Its latest results, released on Thursday, showed revenue increased to £980m, a year-on-year jump of 3.3%. Its average revenue per cable customer rose 5.8%. In November 2008, Virgin Media said it planned to cut 2,200 jobs by 2012, about 15% of its workforce, as part of a group-wide overhaul. (my view)-YeahYeahYeah!...from day 1 they have broken all of their promises.....ie:my Internet bill has double and is planning on raising again(i had a letter a couple of weeks ago telling me so)when they promised to keep the price down as it was(£15 years ago when they started and took over NTL) Richard branson is a fucking lying sack of shit!

Britain's oldest stabbing victim: Son, 61, held after 100-year-old mother is knifed to death
A 100-YEAR-OLD woman found knifed to death in her home is thought to be Britain's oldest stabbing victim.
Hannah Fitzgibbon, who received a telegram from the Queen in September, was discovered with a fatal knife wound to her neck at her house in Whitechapel, East London shortly before 10am today.
Police have launched a murder inquiry and have arrested a 61-year-old man, believed to be her son Michael, who a neighbour said was a black cab driver.
Neighbours said frail Hannah was partially deaf, short-sighted and walked with a zimmer frame.
She lived with her son in a sheltered housing one-bedroom bungalow. Her son is believed to have slept in the lounge.
A friend and neighbour called Julia, 74, said: 'She was a lovely lady and this is absolutely terrible I can't believe it.
'She turned 100 in September and she even got a telegram from the Queen.
'It took pride of place on her cabinet in the lounge and I remember her saying to me how thrilled she was to get something from the Queen.
'Michael her son is a nice person, who looked after his mum and did a lot for her.
'She was very deaf and a bit short-sighted. She needed a zimmer frame to walk, so she never left her home.
'I last saw her a couple of weeks ago and she seemed fine. They were a lovely family and she has lived there a long time, more than 10 years.
'Michael slept in the sitting room because there's only one bedroom.'
Another male neighbour who did not want to be named said: 'She was an East End girl and she had lived here for years. Michael was a quiet bloke who kept himself to himself. He worked as a black cab driver.'
Neighbour Susan Lowe, 54, said: 'I heard she was stabbed in the neck and that the police have taken him away. That poor old lady, I remember her 100th birthday, because everyone took flowers round to them and there were balloons with 100 on outside."
A police spokesman said: 'A murder inquiry has been launched after the fatal stabbing of an elderly woman in E1.
'Police were called at 9.45 on Wednesday 24th February to an address in Hainton Close, E1 to reports of an elderly female stabbed.
'London ambulance service and police attend and discover a 100 year old female suffering from a single stab wound to the neck.
'She was pronounced dead at the scene. Next of kin have been informed.
'A 61 year old man has been arrested and is currently in custody.' A post mortem is due to take place.

Seaworld worker killed by whale-YES! There IS Justice
An employee at SeaWorld Orlando has died after being attacked by a killer whale.
Orange County Fire Rescue spokesman John Mulhall says paramedics were called to the Shamu Stadium at the theme park where they found a worker who could not be revived.
Park visitor Victoria Biniak told WKMG-TV that the trainer had just finished explaining to the audience the show they were about to see.
Biniak said the whale suddenly came up from the water, grabbed the trainer around the waist and "thrashed her all around" to the point the trainer's shoe fell off.
Visitors were evacuated from the park, which was then closed.
SeaWorld Orlando president Dan Brown said officials were investigating but it appeared to be an accident.
He said SeaWorld had never experienced an incident like this.(my view)-YES! at last :) they should NOT(if they do)put the whale down as no animal wants or needs to be trained as entertainment for us to enjoy......i do NOT like these places or the circus

"This is as scheduled when we switched off in December."In the weeks before the technical shutdown, the collider achieved over a million particle collisions and accelerated proton beams to energy levels never reached before, according to CERN. Collisions reached a world record energy level of 2.36 teraelectronvolts (TeV), already allowing scientists to gather data. But CERN now wants to reach 7.0 TeV to try to recreate conditions close to the Big Bang, and run it at those levels for 18 to 24 months. Subsequently the scientists aim to reach the LHC's design energy of 14 TeV, but only following another long technical shutdown in the second half of 2011. Before the LHC experiment, no particle accelerator had exceeded 0.98 TeV. One TeV is the equivalent to the energy of motion achieved by a flying mosquito. The winter standby was used to bolster the accelerator for the higher electric currents demanded by such enormous energy levels, and upgrade its cryogenic cooling system. The LHC, a global effort, aims to resolve physics problems including "dark matter" and "dark energy", thought to account for 96 percent of the cosmos. The scientists' Holy Grail is to find a theorised component called the Higgs Boson, commonly called the "God Particle", which would explain how particles acquire mass. The experiment, the fruit of decades of experiments and research by physicists from around the world, has even attracted Hollywood in recent years with the fictional blockbuster "Angels and Demons".

Planespotters face India charges-WTF
Two planespotters are facing charges of illegally monitoring aircraft in India.
Stephen Hampton and Steven Ayres aroused suspicion after asking staff at a Delhi hotel for a room overlooking a runway.
They were carrying an air traffic control scanner, laptop, binoculars and cameras.
Police arrested them on February 15 and questioned them over monitoring flights at Delhi International Airport.
The pair were hoping to be released without charge but a Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) spokesman said they are due in court on Tuesday after being charged with misusing communications equipment under the Indian Telegraph Act.
Railway worker Mr Hampton and Mr Ayres, both from Bristol, are being held in a New Delhi immigration centre.(my view)-WTF lol no wonder the country is so backwardly challenged..........WHAT WE CAN'T EVEN LOOK UP NOW! what the fuck their planespotters.....like trainspotters who have book and right the numbers down ect...what even the shit hobby entails.........they were doing NOTHING wrong......talk about slavery of rights.....WE ALL HAVE THE RIGHT TO LOOK UP! Ryanair 'abandons passengers' on wrong Canary Island after landing in thunderstorm
Budget airline passengers have learned to put up with a lot over the years.
But you wouldn't have thought it too much to ask for travellers to be dropped at the correct destination.
More than 100 tourists on a Ryanair flight to Lanzarote were stunned when they were abandoned on the wrong Canary Island.
The flight from Bournemouth was forced to divert due to stormy weather and land on the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura. The passengers say they were then left to make their own onward travel arrangements to catch ferries and boats to Lanzarote.
To make matters worse, they say that when the weather cleared the plane flew from Fuerteventura to Lanzarote before taking on passengers and returning to the UK.
One family was left £400 out of pocket after they had to pay for hotel accommodation on Wednesday night and a 30-minute ferry crossing the next day.
Kay Wright, 40, was with her sons Jack, six, and George, five, stepdaughter Tabatha, 23, and her three-year-old daughter Kacey.
She had to phone partner Tony Wainwright at home in Bournemouth for help. Mrs Wright said: 'The plane was packed full of families going away for half term. They made an announcement on the plane saying "you will have to find your own way overland" due to the weather.
'After we landed in Lanzarote, we didn't see a single Ryanair representative. There were no leaflets and no information about what we should do next.'
Tony, a 48-year-old security consultant, said: 'I got a phone call at about 6pm to say they had landed but were on the wrong island.
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCsBYYuaoqPBbcRke8sJPigVK6mH2GZMw5rF6mQzt3UjXI7gQI4x_v1niD6WcIGukbVrUu6PGClVhIEOwgo-QNj4GaFsyfM2ufPsSXQRow9m6FY-10jhAd6FSfOcRLabi3IyXAfuJd6xAk/s400/article-1252245-0860CD6E000005DC-596_468x611.jpg)
'After disembarking they had gone into the terminal but there were no Ryanair representatives to tell them what to do next.'It was left to me and a very helpful Spanish lady to sort out a taxi, arrange alternative accommodation for the night and book ferry crossings to Lanzarote in the morning.
'I don't blame Ryanair for the bad weather but to abandon a family, on the wrong island, is unforgivable.
'It has cost us another £400. 'I know Ryanair is a budget airline but surely they have some duty of care to their passengers.'The family had flown from Bournemouth Airport to Lanzarote on Wednesday and were left stranded along with dozens of other passengers. The weary family finally arrived at Playa Blanca yesterday following an eight mile ferry trip in choppy seas to Lanzarote. Tony said: 'There has been no contact from Ryanair whatsoever. 'No information was posted on their website to say the flight had been diverted. 'When I rang I was told to write and I would receive a reply within 14 days. 'The flights were cheap, they cost about £250, but there's no way we would use Ryanair again.'
A Ryanair spokesman said: 'Ryanair flight FR 4755, Bristol to Lanzarote, diverted to Fuerteventura due to bad weather in Lanzarote. 'Unfortunately ferries were also affected by these high winds so passengers were provided with EU261 information which outlines their entitlement to provide receipted hotel expenses to Ryanair, for refund. 'Ryanair arranged that the ferry company would carry affected Ryanair passengers to Lanzarote free of charge when ferries recommenced the following morning. 'Ryanair apologises to passengers for any inconvenience caused by this weather related diversion but can never put passenger convenience before passenger safety.'The guidelines state that if flight disruption is outside the control of the airline, no monetary compensation is due. (my view)-This is cold hearted of them, after the weather had carmed they could say"everyone back on board"and take them to their RIGHT destination buy NO,they do not give a shit about the people!-The airline should be shut down!!

Sentencing him Judge Sam Katkhuda said his behaviour was "simply not acceptable".Washington of Lakewood, Colorado, was found to have more than double the amount of alcohol in his blood for flying when he was tested on November 9 last year. The court was told the highly experienced pilot, a married father of three, was over the legal alcohol limit as a result of a "miscalculation". But Judge Katkhuda told him: "This is simply not acceptable, it was entirely voluntary on your part that you consumed alcoholic drink." He added: "As pilot, you know well that travelling on air craft not only places special duty on passengers to behave in a reasonable manner, but also places special responsibility on pilots to comply with their duty. "When you arrived to take control of this flight for Atlantic Airlines to Chicago the air crew noticed alcohol on your breath and were disturbed enough to report the matter to airport authorities."(my view)-See.....there is NO justice!

Stop sexualising children, says David Cameron

MagazinesSupermarkets have been criticised for selling padded bras and pole-dancing kits aimed at children. And some teachers have called for girls' magazines to be given age ratings, arguing they "glamorise" sexual promiscuity. Mr Cameron said: "It's time for action. As parents we all worry about our children growing up too fast and missing out on their childhood." He added: "We cannot shield kids from the modern world and no-one would try, but we can try to stop them having inappropriate things put in front of them from an early age." Mr Cameron told BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour: "A lot of parents feel they are engaged in a kind of struggle to try to bring up our kids. "We want to let them see the world as it is but not be bombarded by the wrong sort of images from an early age. "We've all read stories about padded bras and Lolita beds. There are some worries."
'Tough new rules'He said the Advertising Standards Agency should get greater powers to deal with inappropriate marketing aimed at children - something the government says it is also working towards. Children's Secretary Ed Balls said he had raised the issue in the Children's Plan two years ago, adding it was "good to have David Cameron's support because this is something which concerns all parents and is not an issue for party politics".(my view)-I totally agree with David here-in the many years past i have see young girls wearing these words and their clothing...in including boys to:"Cum Princess,Pussy Lover,King Of The Whores,Sex Kitten.Sex Kitty,The Camel Toe Licker,Player,I Love Rape,Daddy's Little Whore,Hoes Before Bro's,My 3 Holes For Sale For Money...ect..the rest are sickening....this must stop!Protecting our kids from these vile companies IS A MUCH.......did you know that little boys and girls sexually touch each other because of what is written on their clothes!

Women say some rape victims should take blame - survey
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0rixAKV_ushy94GGJ1cohqKzdbRoJ3q72SSG85P4AFjo-H4Ycdtmq597wu8zX8dXAN6ZLNPie9o3Wa76nAUjpkPaS8-bdduiCf_oTNfjrrjcaA93QaZbjtLuLrLydmpkdsNSsDZJqYwbz/s400/782295851.jpg)
Less forgivingThe study found that women were less forgiving of the victim than men. Of the women who believed some victims should take responsibility, 71% thought a person should accept responsibility when getting into bed with someone, compared with 57% of men. Elizabeth Harrison from Haven said there was never an excuse for forcing a woman to do something she did not want to. "Clearly, women are in a position where they need to take responsibility for themselves - but whatever you wear and whatever you do does not give somebody else the right to rape you.
Rape victims' views on blame"It's important people take the time to actually look at what they are doing and make sure the person they are with is actually wanting to go ahead with what they are proposing." The survey also found more than one in 10 people were unsure whether they would report being raped to the police, and 2% said they would definitely not do so. The main reasons were being too embarrassed or ashamed (55%), wanting to forget it had happened (41%) and not wanting to go to court (38%). Meanwhile, the survey suggested that many people are relaxed about their safety. Almost half of people have walked home via side streets on their own. One in five has been so drunk they have lost their memory, while one in five has got into a taxi without checking whether it is licensed.
Hardening attitudesWhen asked about their own experiences, more than a third of those polled said they had been in a situation where they could have been made to have sex against their will. Women are more likely to have been in this situation - 40% compared to 20%. And one in five adults had been in a situation where they were made to have sex when they did not want to. This had happened to more women (23%) than men (20%). The online survey, titled Wake Up To Rape, polled 1,061 people aged 18 to 50, comprising 712 women and 349 men. An Amnesty International report five years ago found that a significant minority of British people laid the blame for rape at victims themselves. BBC home affairs correspondent Danny Shaw says this latest study suggests attitudes may have hardened. And the findings may help explain why juries are reluctant to convict in some rape trials. Amnesty International's UK director Kate Allen said the new findings were "alarming but sadly not surprising". "It is depressing that, nearly half a decade later, people are still quick to blame the victim of rape rather than placing the responsibility where it actually belongs - squarely on the shoulders of the perpetrator," she said. "The government has announced that it will develop an 'integrated strategy' to tackle violence against women and these findings are another reminder of how urgent this is and how proper training, support and resourcing will be vital in making it a reality." The Home Office said it had introduced a number of measures to the service provided to rape victims, including new police and prosecutors' guidance, monitoring of services and funding for support for rape victims. A spokeswoman said: "The government is determined to ensure that every victim has immediate access to the services and support they need so that more victims have the confidence to come forward and report these crimes and we can bring the perpetrators to justice." (my view)-99% of woman(who are raped)do dress to provoke the mans sex drive, you may find this hard to believe girls..BUT man have a REALLY high sex drive more then you(woman) Yes! there is masturbation but that HAS to(by law)to do that at home....what are men suppose to do when you go around in short butt length skirts,no wearing knickers, boobs in LOW cut tops and MORE-what are men to do?its like dangling meat in front of a hungry dog.....the dogs going to snatch it from you and eat it......fuck!i have seen INNOCENT men go to prison over sluts who refuse to take responsibility for the way they act and dress,i have seen documentaries on TV about INNOCENT men who had their lives destroyed by women-no place will hire them, all past friends desert you, your parents think your a rapist, people whisper around you and behind your backs........all because of your lies made it to paper and the news, you women KNOW what you are doing from the get go,as a follow man.....women like this SICKEN ME.......and what gets to me worse is...the judge falls for your story because.you guessed it...your cunts who can act innocent and cry so the male judge takes pity on you thinking your tears are real.......dammmmmm i need to podcast this...i'm good at figuring you people out!

Meet Joey, the dog who is allergic to cats and can only eat potatoes and porridge
For most dogs the idea of chasing the neighbourhood cat followed by a relaxing hour or three chewing on a bone is heaven.
But not for Joey, a five-year-old Alsatian-Collie who is allergic to almost everything - including cats.
Joey's allergies are so bad he can't even go bounding around in a grassy field or enjoy a dip in a river.
Dog's dinner: Joey survives on a diet of potatoes and porridge. He is allergic to virtually everything, including cats and bones
And there's no Pedigree Chum for poor Joey either - he's allergic to meat.
That means he has to survive on a diet of potatoes and porridge provided by his loving owners Lisa McCormack, 25, and Scott Muirhead, 36, from Hamilton, Lanarkshire.
Mr Muirhead said: 'Joey was consistently breaking out in boils and sores and we were scratching our heads over why.
'He can't even chase a cat or he'll break out in a rash. We couldn't believe it.
'After a year of trips to the vets we finally got a special blood test performed to see what was going on.
'The results said it all and our local vets were baffled. They had never seen anything like it in a dog before.
Lease of life: Joey is now taking a new type of antibiotic and specialised dog food
'There are two columns on the results sheet and you need a zero on both to show there is no allergy.
'Joey had this for practically nothing. Some of the only things he got zeros for food-wise was potatoes, barley and oats.'
His owners now hope a new type of antibiotic and specialised dog food will give Joey a new lease of life.
'He's looking much better,' said Miss McCormack, a nursery worker.
'He's coming around all right now and his skin condition is improving. We hope it continues and he can live life like a normal dog.'

Paint pensioner 'refused bus ride'
A pensioner was left 10 miles from home after being refused a bus ride because he was carrying a can of paint, it was claimed.
Brian Wakley said he was stopped from taking the 1B Bournemouth to Poole Transdev Yellow bus as the non-toxic green fence paint breached regulations.
The retired officer worker was told to leave the bus by the driver because the £3.75 tin was a "banned substance", he said. Rather than pay more than £20 for a taxi after the episode on Thursday, Mr Wakley called a friend to take him home to Sandford, near Wareham.(my view)-We are banned for carrying some things because of these paki, muslim fuckers ect who are bombers and criminals, just ship these fuckers home to where they belong so we CAN live a peaceful existence,if they want to kill people...KILL YOURSELVES and leave us alone

Warning over sexy instant message called 'Fembot'-FOR LONELY MEN ONLY/GAY WOMEN
Lonely internet users are being warned about Fembot, a piece of malicious software that poses as a flirtatious woman looking to chat on instant messaging services.
Victims are persuaded to give out personal information that could be used for fraud or identity theft, according to security experts.
Fembot was first spotted in 2007 but hasn't been seen much since then.
However, there are signs she may be back on the scene in time for Valentine's Day.
She may also be sporting a new, more sophisticated look, according to Richard Clooke from PC Tools.
"These types of attacks have moved on significantly in this time," he said. "The intelligence has improved such that they can tailor their discussion based on the information they are getting and then change their questions or answers to reflect the responses."
Researchers say Flirtbot-type software typically directs an instant messaging user to click through to a website which may request credit card details or force a virus on to their computer.
"There is a certain part of the population who are willing to engage in these kinds of conversations," added Richard Clooke.
In 2007, a Russian company called CyberLover.ru claimed it had developed software that could successfully pass itself off as a member of the opposite sex.
There's no suggestion that CyberLover was involved in the criminal side of online virtual flirting.
However, it is thought that similar technology is being used by the latest generation of Flirtbots.
Google ranked 'worst' on privacy
Google has the worst privacy policy of popular net firms, says a report.
Rights group Privacy International rated the search giant as "hostile" to privacy in a report ranking web firms by how they handle personal data.
The group said Google was leading a "race to the bottom" among net firms many of whom had policies that did little to substantially protect users.
In response Google said the report was mistaken and that it worked hard to keep user data confidential.
Hostile approachThe report by the veteran cyber rights group is the result of six months' research which scrutinised 20 popular net firms to find out how they handle the personal information users gave up when they started using such services. None of the firms featured in the report got a "privacy friendly" rating. Yahoo and AOL were said to have "substantial threats" to privacy as were Facebook and Hi5 for the allegedly poor way they dealt with user data. Microsoft, one place higher in the rankings than these four firms, was described as having "serious lapses" in its privacy policy. Other net sites, such as BBC.com, eBay and Last.fm were described in the report as "generally privacy aware but in need of improvement". But Privacy International singled put Google at the bottom of its rankings for what the group called its "numerous deficiencies and hostilities" to privacy. "We are aware that the decision to place Google at the bottom of the ranking is likely to be controversial," the group said in the report. Privacy International placed Google at the bottom of its ranking because of the sheer amount of data it gathers about users and their activities; because its privacy policies are incomplete and for its poor record of responding to complaints. "While a number of companies share some of these negative elements, none comes close to achieving status as an endemic threat to privacy," read the report. Responding to the report Nicole Wong, general counsel for Google, said in a statement: "We are disappointed with Privacy International's report which is based on numerous inaccuracies and misunderstandings about our services." Ms Wong added: "We recognise that user trust is central to our business and Google aggressively protects our users' privacy." Privacy International said it planned to release a more detailed report in September produced after detailed consultation with the firms covered in the first draft. (my view)-Of course google is worse....you know why?....google is a FAT CAT company...if they were a small business they would be top ranked but since they FEED on us all to keep their shit going...........like ALL big FAT companies...they couldn't care less for the public.......we are just consumers and food to them NOT human being
Google calls for web privacy laws
Search site Google has called on governments and business to agree a basic set of global privacy rules.
Without global standards the health of the internet was at risk, the firm's privacy chief Peter Fleischer told a UN agency conference in Strasbourg.
He said that the rise of the net meant vast amounts of personal data was now regularly shipped around the globe.
That information often passed through countries with insufficient or no data protection laws, he said.
"Every time a person uses a credit card their information may cross six or seven national boundaries," Mr Fleischer said before the event.
Hostile pastThree quarters of countries have no privacy rules at all and among those that do, many were largely adopted before the rise of the internet, he said. Europe, for example, has strict privacy regulations, but these rules were set out in 1995, largely before the rise of the commercial internet, he said. In contrast, the United States has no country-wide privacy laws, instead leaving them to individual states or even industries to set up. "The minority of the world's countries that have privacy regimes follow divergent models," a copy of his speech said. "Citizens lose out because they are unsure about what rights they have given the patchwork of competing regimes." Google has previously come under repeated fire about its own privacy policies. In June, rights group Privacy International rated the search giant as "hostile" to privacy in a report ranking web firms by how they handle personal data. A month later, the firm said it would change its policies so that its cookies, tiny files stored on a computer when a user visits a website, would auto-delete two years after a user's last visit to its site. Previously they were set to delete in 2038. Speaking at the Strasbourg Unesco conference, Mr Fleischer called for countries to adopt principles agreed by some Asia-Pacific nations. The APEC guidelines have nine principles that aim to protect the individual and safeguard data collection. They have been accepted by countries ranging from Australia to Vietnam. "If privacy principles can be agreed in such divergent countries, then we think that is a model for the rest of the world," Mr Fleischer said before the speech.
Paying the price for a free web
Turning detectiveIn May 2006, AOL released a file containing every search made by 658,000 of their users over the previous three months. It was part of a research project and each user was identified only by a numerical code to protect their identity. But one reporter at the New York Times was intrigued by the potential value of data like this to governments or corporations. Were these outwardly anonymous searches in fact so personal that they would reveal the identity of the searcher? David Gallagher turned detective to try and prove it. After a few hours' work and using nothing other than these search terms and the telephone directory, he had correctly managed to identify his target. It was a 62-year-old woman called Thelma Arnold from Atlanta, Georgia, who was understandably rather shocked and angry. This story illustrates how we have become unwittingly complicit in a deal that is reshaping our world. Twenty years after its creation, the web appears to offer us unprecedented free access to knowledge and entertainment. However this gift comes at a price and in the end someone has to pay. Think back to the search terms you've put into a search engine in the last week. It's likely you can't remember most of them. But as the AOL story shows us, it's these incidentals that, when pieced together, can give a surprisingly revealing picture of who we are. If that information goes public - whether through accident or ill intent - we suddenly feel very exposed and very vulnerable. How much would someone have to pay before you would let them read your diaries, find out what your religious beliefs, political leanings or sexual preferences were, or where your children go to school? What many of us are not aware of is that we are freely giving away exactly this kind of information to websites that we use every day. More importantly, we are doing this on a massive scale. In this digital era, where we spend an estimated £50bn a year (source: IMRG 2009) on online goods and services, we worry about data theft and online security. But there's an even bigger, more important issue and that's how we give away information about ourselves every time we log on and how it is being used by powerful companies now shaping the web. We need to ask ourselves whether we need to be concerned.
Trading informationEvery day in Britain millions of searches are carried out on Google for free. Every month we spend millions of hours on Facebook for free and read millions of articles from free newspapers.
But now look at it the other way round.Every day Google gathers millions of search terms that help them refine their search system and give them a direct marketing bonanza that they keep for months. Every week Facebook receives millions of highly personal status updates that are kept forever and are forming the basis of direct advertising revenue. Every month free newspapers plant and track a cookie tracking device on your computer that tells them what your range of interests are and allows them to shape their adverts and in the future, even content around you. So you're not just being watched, you're being traded. The currency has changed. The currency is now information - your information. Businesses can use that information to make big money. Daily we hand over the minutiae of our lives in return for a convenient and free web. It's been a slow, almost imperceptible shift in culture and in how we value privacy. Few of us are really aware of the implications of these changes and this programme explores whether it is a trade worth making.
